A Funky Good Time

And now for something completely different . . .

As much as I love music, sometimes I forget to enjoy it — or how the right song can pull you out of a bad mood. Like for instance: As I write this, the 1981 classic from Earth, Wind & Fire, “Let’s Groove” is bumping on my computer. It’s very hard to not to have a good feeling wash over you with this song playing . . . especially watching EWF live, with “those” costumes on.

Which brings me to this: It’s time to bring FUNK music back — in a BIG way.

Look at it like this: It was the late 60s-early 70s. The U.S. was involved in an unpopular war, led by a president they later figured out they couldn’t trust. The economy was struggling, there was civil unrest . . . and along comes this music form that is SOLELY focused on making sure people have a good time.

The beat, bass guitar, keyboard riffs and guitar licks combine with the lyrics which are about absolutely nothing else but reminding you of how funky the song is and how good a time you should be having, regardless of whatever else is going on in your life. As the architect of P-Funk George Clinton wisely said: “Funk not only moves, it can RE-move. Dig?”

Eh. I’m writing too much. Funk speaks for itself. Suffice to say, I challenge you to watch this clip of Larry Graham’s “Pow!” in its entirety and remain in a bad mood. It’s just too much fun.

And if you’re wondering what any of this has to do with God . . . well, who do you think was driving “The Mothership?” 😉
