Love Goes A.P.E. – Part 2: Phileo

With phileo, or brotherly/sisterly love (Hebrews 13:1), one cares for the other as much as one cares for the self (Genesis 2:7, 17, 19). Phileo is the missing link (Genesis 3:23). It is based upon shared vision, purpose, and divine revelation (Genesis 2:28), which make it difficult to understand and challenging to practice (2 Samuel 1:26).

It seeks what is best for the other person and helps him/her to be free to fulfill purpose (Genesis 2:18). Though there is a bonding that occurs in phileo, it is never selfish, demanding, or grasping (Genesis 2:9). Phileo allows people to receive without requiring them to give in return.

Phileo was not evident until God created the man and the man responded to God with fond affection and obedience (Genesis 2:20). Phileo relationships thrive on transparency, vulnerability, truth, loyalty, affirmation, acceptance, accountability, and authority (1 Samuel 18: 1-4; 19:2-4). If followed, phileo will lead to the next stage of love.
