Prayer Focus: Typhoon Yagi’s wake of destruction

Praying for the people of Vietnam as they deal with the aftermath of Typhoon Yagi.

Yagi, Asia’s most powerful typhoon this year, has killed at least 14 and injured 176 others, according to Vietnamese state media. It has now been downgraded to a tropical depression. But authorities are warning about the continued risk of flooding and landslides as the storm moves westwards.

As storms like these continue to increase in strength and frequency, we must remember that not every country is set up to handle these storms — not to prepare for them, nor to quickly and effectively deal with the aftermath. For many of these people, their entire lives — and sadly too many loved ones — are simply washed away, and they are left to rebuild.

Prayer for survivors of Typhoon Yagi

Heavenly Father,

We come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up the victims of Typhoon Yagi. In the wake of such a devastating storm, we find our souls yearning for Your comfort, Your peace, and Your unending love.

Lord, we ask You to wrap Your loving arms around those who have lost loved ones. Grant them solace in their grief, courage in their sorrow, and hope in their despair. May they feel Your presence in every tear and hear Your whisper in their quiet moments of anguish.

For those who have lost homes, possessions, and livelihoods, we pray for strength and resilience. Help them to rebuild not just their lives, but their spirits. Provide them with the resources they need and the support of a compassionate community. Guide them to find stability in the chaos and light in the darkness.

We lift up the injured and the sick, praying for swift and complete healing. Bless the hands of those who care for them — the doctors, nurses, and volunteers — with Your wisdom and grace. May Your healing touch be upon every wound and every broken heart.

For the children affected by this disaster, shield them from fear and trauma. Surround them with love and care, and restore their sense of safety and normalcy. Let their innocent hearts be a source of inspiration and hope for us all.

Lord, we also pray for those who are providing aid and relief. Strengthen their hands and renew their spirits as they work tirelessly to bring comfort and assistance. Bless them with the resources they need and the courage to face the challenges ahead.

Though we may not always understand the reasons for such suffering, help us to find faith in Your greater plan. Teach us to be instruments of Your peace and compassion, reaching out to our brothers and sisters in their time of need.

In this moment of crisis, draw us closer to You and to each other. Let our collective humanity shine brightly, reflecting Your love and mercy.

We ask all this in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ, who calms the stormy seas and brings peace to troubled hearts.

Amen.

Peace: Be Still

Sometimes, just for kicks (and insight), I like to actually visualize what might have been like to have walked alongside the disciples as they traveled with Jesus. Because I don’t know Aramaic, and I don’t speak in “thees” and “thous,” I allow myself to imagine Jesus speaking in everyday language.
