The Secret to “The Secret”

By now, chances are you’ve heard of “The Secret” — the DVD/Book enterprise which essentially explains the Law of Attraction, and how to use it to attract more of what you want, and less of what you don’t want. Here’s a video that’s not a bad way to start your day:

I LOVE stuff like this. I first was introduced to the concept of the Law of Attraction back when I was living in South Florida, and attending The Universal Truth Center for Better Living. The more I look back, the more I realize that I’ve always been drawn to philosophy/theology that puts some power and responsibility in my hands. Otherwise, I’m just a puppet.

Anyway, the only problem I have with “The Secret” has nothing to do with its content, but in the fact that its popularity may overshadow its potency. People looking for a quick fix — lose weight, make money, whatever — may miss the awesome and simple principles taught in “The Secret.” Then, if they don’t drop that 10 pounds, or make that big check . . . “Ah, it’s a hoax. I knew it all the time.”

This link provides some pointers on applying The Secret. I’ll add my own two cents which may overlap some of these tips.

Messenger’s Tip #1: Focus on what you want, not on what you don’t want. This seems like a no-brainer until you realize how much attention you have to pay to how you are looking at something and thinking about it. I’m going through a very difficult divorce right now, complete with custody battle. It’s hard not to think about worst-case scenarios and ongoing drama. But the way the Law of Attraction works, the more I think about things going badly, the more likely they are to go badly.

Hence, I get to think about and pray for a healthy relationship with my future ex-wife, and visualize the two of us co-parenting our child with a spirit of cooperation, respect, and dare I say, LOVE. Now, again it’s not easy to do this during a tough divorce, but that’s how it works.

Instead of thinking about what you don’t want, ask yourself what you DO want. Visualize it in vivid detail and bring it to life in your mind’s eye. Allow yourself to FEEL the emotions associated with that. This will take effort, but it’s worthwhile.

Messenger’s Tip #2: Marinate. This is the possibly hardest part of applying The Secret, especially if you’re looking for a quick fix — sustained conscious thinking. In other words, not just thinking of what you want, but CONTINUING to think about what you want. Any limiting thoughts you have, they didn’t just pop up overnight; they’ve grown over time, and probably deep roots. You have the power to replace those limiting thoughts, but it won’t happen overnight. Which is why, for sustained results, you must immerse yourself in your vision of your life. Doing so will change how you see your world, which will in turn change your thoughts, attitudes and actions. Changing your perspective, thoughts and actions will change your life.

But that requires paying attention to what you’re thinking at any given moment — mental discipline. Don’t think of it as difficult — if you do that, guess what? It’s difficult. As my good friend Troy Mathis would say: “It’s not hard work, it’s just work.” It’s what’s necessary for you to be, do and have the things you desire.

What are your thoughts? Have you seen or read “The Secret?” What tips do you have?

Resolve Not To Resolve

Here’s a resolution: Make no resolutions. If there are changes you want to see in your life, start working on them immediately. And avoid making big promises to yourself you know you can’t keep. In fact, the older I get, the more I understand that lasting change comes in the little things you do.
